What is Suntanning?
Suntanning is the body’s natural protection against the harmful effects of UV of sunburn and related disorders. When you expose your skin to the shorter Ultraviolet light UVB and the larger dose of longer UVA, it causes the pigmentation (melanin) in the skin to come to the surface layers where it oxidizes to form a brown coloured protective layer.

2.
How safe is it?
No Solarium can guarantee that you get a safe tan, but as there are thousand of UVA systems being used in other parts of the world such as Europe and the USA, with no adverse effects; it appears that Australia should be no different. Human life is totally reliant on sun exposure, and the life giving effects of UV light. The question for each of us – a question that nobody knows the exact answer to is – how much sun exposure is appropriate and how much is too much. New research supports the position that moderate sun exposure, for those of us who can develop a tan, is the best way to maximize the potential benefits of sun exposure while minimizing the potential risks of either too much or too little exposure.
3.
Indoor versus outdoor tanning.
Does tanning indoors have the same effect as tanning outdoors? Yes. The indoor advantage is “control” and never to overexpose the skin to UV radiation. You know what you’re getting from an individual tanning session as this is a “controlled time”. It is precise, calculated, controlled exposure designed to give you a cosmetically pleasing tan without burning the skin. When you go outdoors you place yourself in an uncontrolled environment. You do not know how much you are getting, therefore frequent outdoor tanning can result in developing sunburn and associated disorders such as skin cancer.
4.

Do I have to protect my eyes?
Yes, as eye lids are not effective at blocking out UV light. Simply put this to the test by closing your eyes wherever you are and look toward the available lighting, and put your hand in front of your closed eyes. You will notice a shadow passing in front of your eyes, indicating that the available light is getting through your eyelids and reaching the back of your eyes. This is an illustration of what visible light can do, and UV light penetrates just as easily. Therefore it is essential that protective eyewear be used at all times whilst using a solarium.

5.

Why Tan?
With your skin being your body’s largest organ it makes sense to protect it. Many people tan indoors before going away on holidays to get a good tan base. In fact a tan is your body’s own natural SPF of a 2 to 8 depending on your skin type. A good base in combination with a SPF helps many guarantee an enjoyable burn free time. If you tan outdoors we strongly recommend that you use 30+ Sun Screen to protect your skin, and limit your time to sun exposure.

6.

What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer has a 20 to 30 year latency period. The rates of skin cancer we are seeing today are the results of the ignorant misbehavior of the 1960’s 1970’s and 1980’s. Recall: Society used to view sunburn as an inconvenient rite of summer, a precursor to developing a summer tan. Society felt that sunburn would “fade” into tans, and so tanners hit the beaches with baby oil and reflectors. Severe burns were commonplace.

Today we know how reckless that approach was and the rates of skin cancer we are seeing today reflect that ignorance.

Photobiology research community has determined that most skin cancers are related to a strong pattern of intermittent exposure to ultraviolet light in those people who are genetically predisposed to skin cancer, and not simply to cumulative exposure. That suggests that heredity and a pattern of repeated sunburning is what we need to prevent. This kind of prevention is exactly what the indoor tanning industry is doing effectively.

The indoor tanning industry believes that our role in teaching sunburn prevention will help to reverse the increase that largely are a result of the misbehavior that took place all those years ago, before the professional tanning industry existed, and before we were organized to teach sunburn prevention

7.

Can tanning accelerators speed up the tanning process?
Tanning Accelerators contain active compounds which increase the amount of melanin in your skin, therefore allowing for a deeper and darker tan for your UV exposure.

All Supre accelerators combine fast action tanning with essential nutrients and moisturisers for your skin. The vast range of products available, allows you to tailor your sessions to suit your individual needs and budget.

8.

How often can I tan?
We suggest that when you tan, you allow 48 hours before your next tanning session. This will allow your tan to fully develop in between visits. You can then build up your tan by using the solarium three times a week. Once you have achieved your desired tan, you can then maintain this by tanning once or twice a week.
